Alpaca Fiber from the Textile Point of View

Buyalpaca.com - Alpaca fashions

The Amerindians of Peru used alpaca fiber in the manufacture of many styles of fabrics for thousands of years before its introduction into Europe as a commercial product. The alpaca was a crucial component of ancient life in the Andes, as it provided not only warm clothing but also meat. Alpaca fiber is warmer than sheep's wool and lighter in weight. It is soft and luxurious and lacks the "prickle" factor.

Many items today can be made from alpaca fiber including apparel, such as hats and sweaters, housewares, such as rugs and pillows, and felted items, such as handbags and slippers. Even fine lingerie and bed linens can be made from alpaca.

The American Alpaca herd and the American Alpaca Fiber industry is still very much in its infancy. The opportunity to create more items commercially in the future will be dependent on the number of alpacas that make up the American Alpaca herd. The demand for US alpaca fiber is increasing as the awareness of its luxurious qualities become mainstream. Many more alpacas will be needed to sustain a commercial fiber industry in the US allowing for tremendous growth in the alpaca industry.
